Cub Scout Background

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on February 8, 1910 by William D. Boyce.  He was inspired by Sir Robert Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts Association in Britain.  Scouting continued to evolve and grow, finally officially launching its Cub Scouts Program in 1930.  By the end of it's first year, this program had over 5,102 members.  Today, there are over 100 million youth members in Scouts.

The History of Pack 911

In 2010, Alfred"Trip" Franklin started Pack 911 with a charter through Sarasota Suncoast Academy.  The inspiration for the Pack number, 9-1-1, came from Mr. Franklin’s work for the Sarasota County Sheriff's office in the 9-1-1 Center as a 9-1-1 Supervisor and Dispatcher.  Brett M. Thomas who was his co-worker and then Cubmaster of Pack 311 mentored Mr. Franklin in starting Pack 911; also starting a sisterhood between the two Packs.

Mr. Chad McDaniel started as the Assistant Cubmaster and was instrumental in helping Mr. Franklin run the daily operations of the Pack.  Due to Mr.Franklin's unpredictable work schedule, Mr. McDaniel quickly became the Co-Cubmaster to assist during Mr. Franklin’s absences.

In the 2nd year of Pack 911's existence Mr. Franklin passed away in October 2011.  Mr. Thomas had submitted and was approved for Mr. Franklin to receive the William D. Boyce Award and Uniform Knot for starting a new unit before being able to present it to him at the next Pack meeting.  Mr.Thomas eventually presented the award and knot to Mr. Franklin’s wife Mandy Franklin. Mr. McDaniel wears a replica knot on his uniform in Mr. Franklin’s honor.

Mr. McDaniel continued on as the sole Cubmaster of Pack 911 with the assistance of his wife Shayne McDaniel the Pack Trainer, and Roger Coles as Assistant Cubmaster.  The McDaniel’s worked tirelessly at the Pack and Council levels, continuing to develop and grow Pack 911.

In 2013, Mr. McDaniel transitioned to Pack Committee Chairman.  With Mandy Franklin's blessing, Chad McDaniel was presented with the first Alfred"Trip" Franklin Founders Award for dedicated service to Pack 911 at their 2013 Blue and Gold Ceremony by Tiger Cub Den Leader and incoming Cubmaster Mr. Daryl Roberts.  This was an honor for Mr. Roberts to present this award, because Mr. Roberts also works for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Roberts served as Cubmaster from 2013 until his transition to Pack Committee Chairman in 2015.  Mr. Roberts took pride in teaching the scouts of Pack 911 about respect for those who serve as First Responders on the home front and all those who serve abroad in the Military.

Mr. Roberts served as the Pack Committee Chairman until 2017 when the difficult decision was made not to re-charter the Pack for the 2017 - 2018 year.

We are Pack 9-1-1.
